Uniform Update

Spring has sprung and that means a few changes to our uniforms. We’re back to regular shoes for girls (no boots) and shorts are allowed (boys and girls) for term 5. Regular dress on top is still required.

Picture Re-takes, Class Photos, Off-Campus Student Pictures – Thursday April 15

Our class pictures, re-takes, and off-campus school photos will be taken Thursday, April 15th.  If your student needs a retake done, please return the original pictures that you do not like and we will gladly have the photographer retake your picture for you.

Our off-campus students can come any time during the day, or between 3-5 pm, to have their pictures taken. Please park behind the school and enter through the Multipurpose Room doors. We would LOVE to include ALL of our students in the yearbook!

Parent/Teacher Conferences – Thursday April 15 & Friday 16

On-Campus Students Only – You can schedule a conference by logging into Skyward. We have had so few opportunities to have parents at the school – we prefer to see you in person for these conferences (wear a mask, please).

Speech Festival

Every year at American Preparatory Academy we have a speech festival. This gives all students a chance to practice their speaking skills. Students will be given a two-minute window to perform a speech or poem for their peers. Every student will be required to perform in class and then one student from each class will be chosen to perform at the school-wide festival. Draper 2 Campus – 2021 Speech Festival

Elementary In-class Festival

Every year at American Preparatory Academy we have a speech festival. This gives all students a chance to practice their speaking skills. Students will be given a two-minute window to perform a speech or poem for their peers. Every student will be required to perform in class and then one student from each class will be chosen to perform at the school-wide festival.

Why a speech festival?

  1. To give the students the experience of getting in front of others and speaking in a place where they are safe.
  2. To encourage students to improve in their public speaking abilities.
  3. To give students with a public speaking talent an opportunity to shine.

Rules are as follows:

  • Students are allotted a maximum of two minutes.
  • Every student must perform in their class festival.
  • Students are allowed to have props and/or a costume, but they have to wear their uniforms when they are not performing.
  • Students must choose something that is:
    • From their grade’s curriculum (something they have learned in class)
    • A non-curriculum speech or poem at their grade level or higher
  • All speeches or poems must be approved by the student’s teacher. Students need to bring a copy of their speech into class by April 15th to be approved.
  • Students will give a short introduction of their speech/poem before their performance.

Dear Parents,

Our curriculum order has been delayed, so we are postponing our Term 5 materials pick up until after Spring Break. We anticipate it will be on April 13 from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm in the multipurpose room.

In the newsletter I posted a link for the annual parent survey, however, none of the off campus teachers were listed. Because the programs were so different, we are preparing a separate survey for our off campus families to complete. We anticipate it will be ready in a few weeks. If you have already completed the survey, that’s fine! If you haven’t, you can wait until we have a survey specifically for you.

I am a builder when I quickly acknowledge mistakes and humbly make amends

 One of the things we have found about apologizing and admitting to wrongdoing is that many people will say the words “I’m sorry, BUT…” 

Try to avoid ever giving any type of excuse when apologizing.  It takes the contrition out of the apology itself, no matter how good the excuse is.  Looking someone in the eye and saying you made a mistake and are sorry, has been found to make you all that more vulnerable and gives the other person the opportunity to let down their defensive guard and forgive.

March 30 – Parent Empowerment Night  – Child Safety and Prevention of Human Trafficking

Did you know there were 70 cases of human trafficking reported IN UTAH in 2019? And over 330 cases since 2007 IN UTAH. This is not happening just in other places, this is happening on our streets. Sex trafficking, labor trafficking, male, female, old, young. Do you know how to spot it?  We have invited 3 Strands Global Foundation to come and address this important topic and empower our families to learn and prevent. Please come join us VIRTUALLY on Tuesday, March 30th at 7 pm. When you attend, your student will earn a reward and you will be empowered with knowledge. This is appropriate for you to watch with your students and have a discussion about as a family. There will be simultaneous Spanish translation available on the zoom call. 

April 1 – Jeans Day 

For students with no #2 OR #7 card moves. Watch for a sticker coming home on Wednesday so you know if your student qualifies to wear jeans! Here are the guidelines:

April 1st – Regular Shoes for Girls

As of Thursday, April 1st, there will be no more boots allowed for girls.  If we do have a typical spring snow storm, students are welcome to wear their boots to school but will need to change into regular school shoes once they arrive at school.

April 2nd – Annual Builders Assembly

All students will wear their best Monday through Thursday uniform.  We want everyone to look smart and snappy for this very important assembly!

Parent Survey

We are offering a free homework pass to all students whose parents complete the survey. It can be used during Term 5, for groups regular homework or homeroom subject homework (not eligible for use on tests, book reports, or projects), at the discretion of the homeroom teacher. Please complete ASAP!

Zee Maps

We encourage our families to form carpool groups, so that less cars come onto the property. To facilitate this, you can access a Zee Map for our campus – it provides the contact information for families living near you. Returning To Campus Term 5

Dear Off Campus Parents,

Thank you for your request to return to campus for Term 5! We are so excited to have your student back on campus with us.

We will expect your student on Monday, April 12 at 8:30 am. It is very helpful if you come a little later, so we can get your student checked in and oriented.

Please Bring

  • All materials, including books, docket, pencils, etc. You can use the box we provided Term 1.
  • Lunch (unless you order 48 hours in advance)
  • Mask – wear one, have a second in your backpack
  • Nametag – unless your student is new to APA this year, in which case, it will be with the homeroom teacher

Parents should come to the lobby to receive the Pick Up tag, and then our staff will escort students to the classrooms.

Follow Up On Todays’ Event 3.25.21

Dear Draper 2 Parents,

This afternoon the Draper 3 APA administrators were made aware of a bomb threat that was written on a bathroom stall.  Out of an abundance of caution, the D3 students were evacuated to the Draper 2 gym and local law enforcement came to “clear” the school. We anticipated this might impact our afternoon pick up, but the building was quickly cleared and declared safe. The police did not find this to be a credible threat. The Draper 3 students returned to their campus and our afternoon pick up concluded with minimal delays. Students at the Draper 2 campus were not impacted by the event – classes continued normally and they were dismissed at the regular time.

We are grateful to our amazing Draper 3 staff, students, and parents for their calm and appropriate response to today’s incident. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful weekend!

Urgent Message 3.25.21

This afternoon Draper 3 APA administrators were made aware of a bomb threat that was written on a bathroom stall.   We have no indication this is a credible threat, however out of an abundance of caution we have moved all D3 students into the D2 gym and we have contacted local law enforcement to “clear” the school.
It appears this will take us to the end of the school day.
Therefore, please pick up all D3 students at D2 today at their NORMAL pickup time.   If you typically use the F curb, please follow directions to the C/D curb.  If you typically pick up at the E curb, please follow directions to the A/B curb.
Please drive slowly and carefully, paying attention to the people guiding carpool as the driving lanes will flow in different directions today as a result.
We will follow up with more information as we have it available.

I am a builder when I quickly acknowledge mistakes and humbly make amends

 At American Prep, we believe in correcting mistakes when they happen.  When our students are reading and they mispronounce a word, we correct it immediately and then repeat the sentence. When students are learning new information in class, there is a lot of repetition.  Why is that? We have learned that if we go back and correct what we did wrong, our brain will remember the last action, which is now a corrected one. Acknowledging our mistakes and correcting our behavior requires less time and energy than ignoring or wallowing in them. Clinical psychology research suggests that how people view mistakes dictates how well and how often people learn and progress.  When mistakes are quickly acknowledged and amends humbly made, it demonstrates our learning from the mistake and, thus, becomes easier with practice and repetition. Everyone makes mistakes. That doesn’t mean you have failed, it means you have found ONE way that didn’t work.

Assemblies Resume

We will begin holding assemblies for K-3 and 4-6 grade groups every week. This in accordance with state regulations that allow groups of people to gather as long as everyone is wearing masks. D2 – St. Patrick’s Day Guidelines

St. Patrick’s Day – March 17

If your student wants to bring the luck o’ the Irish to school, please follow these dressing guidelines: 

  • Regular uniform 
  • Non-distracting green socks, green jewelry
  • Non-distracting green hair accessories for girls
  • Green Shamrock lapel pins or stickers on clothing
  • No – hats, scarves, green hair, green makeup, ta5toos, etc.

While some people enjoy the game of pinching those not wearing green, our “no touching” policy includes pinching. Please remind your students to refrain from pinching others at school.

D2 Newsletter 3.15.21

 I am a builder when I quickly acknowledge mistakes and humbly make amends

As we have practiced this month’s Builders theme, we have found it gets easier and easier each time you truly admit to making a mistake and then look for the best way to make amends for that mistake.  None of our students intend to do harm to one of their friends – sometimes they just get caught up in the moment. What do we do to try to make things better? We quickly acknowledge that we made a mistake then we follow through just as quickly with an idea to make the situation better, without using the phrase, “I’m sorry but . . .” After we have apologized and have made the appropriate amends, we must then leave it in the hands of the other person to quickly accept our apology. Keep practicing this theme in your family and see how much easier it gets each time you do it.

March 16th – 6th Grade: Registration for Draper 3

If your student will be attending Draper 3 next year, you need to register them as soon as possible. Please complete the following:

  1. Watch the re-enrollment video:  https://youtu.be/TcdnZ3Rrm84
  2. Fill out this google form https://forms.gle/ZNScnn4m68UsXqcdA  (code needed to fill out form is in video– you must watch the video)
  3. Wait 12-24 hours for Skyward to update
  4. Log into your parent access to Skyward and click on the “returning student enrollment” tab on the left side of your screen and follow the prompts to register.  

 Please contact the D3 registrar, Jerilynn Phillips (jphillips@apamail.org), or Todd Christensen (tchristensen@apamail.org) with any questions. Your priority enrollment may be forfeited if not complete by March 16th. 

March 17, 18 – Assemblies Resume

We will begin holding assemblies for K-3 and 4-6 grade groups every week. This in accordance with state regulations that allow groups of people to gather as long as everyone is wearing masks. If you have concerns about having your students attend assemblies, please email Mrs. Peery epeery@apamail.org. 

March 19 – Jeans Day – Friday – No #2 or #7 card moves

This is a change from our originally published calendar. 

April 15 – Class Pictures, Retakes, Off-Campus Pictures

Our class pictures, re-takes and off-campus school photos will be taken Thursday, April 15th.  If your student needs a retake done, please return the original pictures that you do not like and we will gladly have the photographer retake it for you.

Our off campus students can come any time during the day, or between 3-5 pm to have their pictures taken. Please park behind the school and enter through the Multipurpose Room doors. We would LOVE to include ALL of our students in the yearbook!

Spark Spirit Campaign

We received over 575 submitted designs district-wide. Draper 2 had some amazing submissions, including two students who made it to the Top 10 and 16 students who made it to the third tier!!  Sabrina Smith & Carson Drage, our two Top 10 winners, will be awarded a $10 Chick-Fil-A gift card.  Our Third Tier winners (below) will be awarded an American Prep Apparel Gift Certificate that can be used towards any purchase, including the Spark Spirit T-shirt.

COVID Update

Great news! We are responding to updates from the state regarding COVID-19 restrictions. Our students no longer have to wear a mask during recess. If you prefer to have your students wear their masks, please notify the homeroom teacher.

6th Grade – Draper 3 Tour Dates
