November Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I show gratitude
It’s easy to remember to use words like “Thank you” in showing gratitude, but there are so many other words we can include: “You’re so kind to help me with my math,” or “I really enjoyed the lunch you packed for me today.”
The challenge is showing gratitude in deed. A deed is an action that is performed intentionally. It takes a little extra effort. We can show gratitude by writing a note to someone, respecting school property and rules, and washing the dishes for someone that prepared you a meal. November is a great month to remember to show gratitude in both word and deed.

Gratitude
This year has brought many challenges, and as parents, we are so grateful for your continued support. You have completed wellness checks, sent masks to school, and kept students home when they have symptoms or are quarantined. THANK YOU! We appreciate your patience, flexibility, and positive attitudes as we experience the unique challenges of COVID!
We are also so grateful for our amazing teachers and instructors. This year has brought the challenge of never having enough subs to cover for missing staff, and our teachers have embraced students from other classes, demonstrated amazing flexibility and all of this with a smile! We would invite you to reach out and express appreciation to the staff of your students. A note, email, treat – anything would be appreciated. Thank you!
Boots Update
Our uniform guide allows girls to wear black boots with low heels from October through March. All students can wear snow boots, but must bring a pair of shoes to change into while at school.

Hiring School Lunch Employee
The School Lunch program is looking for a part-time employee to work daily. Must be willing to travel and work at any campus (mileage paid). Email lunch@apamail.org with questions, and apply online https://www.americanprep.org/careers/
COVID Update – What to Expect
If your student has been exposed to, or tests positive for, COVID-19, please email the school nurse directly at nurse@apamail.org. She will evaluate the situation and tell you when your student can return to school.
When we are notified that a student has tested positive, we conduct contact tracing to identify which students were exposed (was within 6’ for more than 15 minutes) and are required to quarantine at home. We notify the parents as soon as possible, either via email or phone, and send the students home immediately. The other students in the class are notified that there is a case, but that their student was not exposed, and they can continue to attend school as normal.
Often the process of identifying symptoms, getting tested, waiting for results, and confirming a plan with the health department takes 3-5 days.
If one of your students is placed on quarantine, your other students may continue to attend school as usual. The quarantined student should not leave the home, but the other members of the home are not impacted – they are not considered exposed. Students placed on quarantine from a school exposure, can get tested after day 7 of Quarantine and, if the result is negative, can return to school right away. Often this means missing only 1-2 days of school.

November Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I show gratitude
Do you know that grateful people are healthier, happier, and more optimistic? Studies show that individuals who adopt an “attitude of gratitude” get more exercise, eat a healthier diet, have less depression, cope better with stress, and have less physical ailments.
Gratitude is a valuable virtue to teach and practice in our homes. We can begin by engaging our brains in grateful thoughts. If we think about it, our brains and hearts can really only focus on one thing at a time. It is almost impossible to be truly unhappy and grateful, or selfish and grateful, or even angry and grateful. Besides, once we start feeling grateful, our brains look for more things to be grateful for!

October Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I demonstrate integrity
Integrity is more than being honest. It is doing what’s right even when it’s difficult. There are many ways to be a person of integrity: standing up for what you believe in, as long as it’s based in truth; not settling for something that is less than what you deserve; speaking out when there is injustice. We know our students are individuals of integrity. This month we have been challenging students to continue building this character trait and find opportunities for growth.

Parent Teacher Conference – Meal Donations
We have a tradition of feeding our amazing teachers during Parent Teacher Conferences when our teachers stay late and staff is working hard.
To minimize exposure, we are choosing to order box meals instead of asking for home prepared food donations. However, we do need store bought beverages and snacks.
With limited opportunities to volunteer, this is a chance to support your teacher and our campus! Please go here to contribute:
Thursday Dinner Donation – https://americanprepfoundation.squarespace.com/draper-2
Drink & Snack Donation – Click here
We are making an extra effort to track all donations of time, supplies, or money this year. So don’t forget to record your donations here: https://draper2.americanprep.org/volunteer/
Jeans Day Guidelines
On Thursday, October 29, we will have our first Jeans Day reward for students with no missing work (no #7 on the learning plan for the previous 2 weeks). You will know your child qualified to wear jeans if there is a sticker attached to their learning plan on Wednesday night.
Please remember: Jeans Day will consist of any of the following uniform pieces:
- Blue jeans in good repair (no colored jeans, jeans with holes, skinny jeans, decorative markings, or shorts) You MUST be able to pinch an inch on each side of your jeans, NO skinny jeans. If students do not want to wear jeans, they can wear their regular uniform bottoms or khaki pants.
- Blue polo or regular uniform top may be worn. (4-6 grade no tie required).
- Regular uniform shoes are to be worn.
Students may, of course, wear their regular or Friday uniform.
Students who have NOT earned this privilege, but come in jeans, will need to call home for an adult to bring them a change of clothes.
Watch for that sticker on the learning plans next Wednesday, October 28th, to see if your child earned the Jeans Dress Day special privilege. We know they can do it!! Students will have the opportunity to earn another Jeans Dress Day in two weeks if they have no missing work.

This month, we are focusing on the builder theme of integrity. Integrity includes honesty—but goes deeper. When you have integrity, you do the right thing—even when no one is watching. When you have integrity, your outward actions are always consistent with your inward convictions. When you have integrity, you stand up for what is right and speak out when there is injustice. If you see a great example of integrity this month—please share it! Let’s celebrate this amazing builder trait!

Thank you, also, to Harmon’s in The District for donating pumpkins for the kids to decorate and to YESCO Outdoor Media for donating electronic billboard advertising for the event. Our community partners are amazing!
I am so impressed with our talented and creative student entrepreneurs who ran booths on Saturday. So many of our students spent hours (if not days, weeks, and months) preparing for the event, set sales goals, and had great success on Saturday. We have incredible students!
We had a great turnout for the kids costume parade. To see photos, go to
https://www.americanprepfoundation.org/boutique. Congratulations to the winners!
And finally, thank you to everyone who came out and supported the fundraiser and APA’s Builders Club!
Special Thanks!
