I am a Builder when I look for ways to serve others – Kigatsuku
This month we talk about the concept of “kigatsuku”, which describes the trait of being able to see others’ needs, to sense others’ needs, and then to strive to meet them without being asked or directed to. We hope you have seen some evidence that our students have caught on to this great concept!
We also hope that you notice it and can give them praise so they will expand upon their ability to see others’ needs! We have enjoyed watching the children in school as they have been looking out for others’ needs this month – thank you for sharing your amazing children with us!

Calling all Heroes of Hygiene . . .
There’s a little over one week left of our donation drive! So far we have collected more than 1000 items. Wow! It has been so exciting to see how much we can accomplish as we all work together to defeat germs around the world! Remember — we need: TRAVEL SIZE shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, lotion; as well as floss, packaged toothbrushes, or packaged combs.
Let’s finish strong — keep bringing in those hygiene items! The drive will end on Thursday Dec. 17th! And, if we make our goal as a campus we’ll celebrate with a Crazy Sock and Tie Day on that day! If we double our goal, we’ll celebrate with a FREE DRESS DAY (date to be announced next week).
Reading University Store – December 9
All the hours of reading is about to be rewarded! We have set up a COVID-friendly Reading University Store where students can pick prizes. Keep up the good work!

Thank You from the Character Development Team
A very heartfelt thank you to our amazing parent volunteers who came to our 5th grade event on Friday to help sanitize between stations, safely serve food, assist our teachers at each station, etc. We can’t do our events without you and we appreciate you BEYOND any words that we can express!
Missing School for Non-Medical Reasons
Please remember to schedule trips and vacations during one of our many breaks. We typically have a one-week break every 7 weeks. When your student misses school, they are missing valuable information that is difficult to give to them in a packet, and they often have a tricky time getting caught up. Our teachers are so busy gathering materials for students home sick or on quarantine – please don’t add to their workload.
Winter Dress for Recess
To reduce the number of students on the playground at one time, some classes have recess early in the morning when the temperature can be cold. Please send students with warm winter coats, gloves, a hat and a scarf (if needed). We encourage you to label all items, especially coats! When it’s extremely cold, instructors will keep students inside for recess and/or shorten time outside.
COVID Quarantine Updates
The Utah Department of Health has updated the quarantine guidelines. Those who have been exposed to COVID-19 are now required to quarantine only 10 days. This means more time back in school for our students! https://coronavirus-download.utah.gov/Health/Care_Booklet_English.pdf
If your student tests positive or is exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, please contact nurse@apamail.org. The nurse will inform the school directors and teachers.

If you place a Spirit Wear order of $30 or more, you will receive a free APA beanie ($20 value)!!

It has been great to see so many of your smiling faces at the end of the driveway in the mornings and afternoons during carpool. Thank you for making my job easier by showing up at your assigned carpool time and not turning left in or out of the driveway. I appreciate you!
Message From Carolyn Sharette 12.4.20
Dear APA Families,
You will probably hear news that tonight the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) voted to impose a 2.8 million dollar penalty against APA due to its belief that our spending of these dollars on our Paraeducators was not an allowable use of special education funds.
We strongly disagree with the USBE on this. Our special education program is innovative and successful. Our students score, on average, above other special education students in the state. Our parents love our program because we don’t stigmatize students by pushing them into special education “rooms” where they are separated out from their peers. We know this is best for our students and we are committed to doing what is best for them.
I believe our governing board will decide to appeal this decision and we will have a period of time to put together our opposition to this decision. We hope many of you will be willing to help us as we find ways that parents can use their voices to object to this governmental overreach that will harm kids.
It is important to tell you that we have an agreement with the USBE that we can pay back the funds over 10 years. This means we would pay a maximum of $280,000 per year. Our schools’ annual budget is about 45 million dollars, so we are not overly concerned about the payments from a financial perspective.
But we are VERY concerned about them from a principled perspective. These funds were spent to serve special education students. Even the state auditors do not claim that they were not. So , we should not be “paying them back”. Requiring us to do so will make less resources available to current students at APA. What possible good can come from that?
We have great concerns that our state education leaders are behind the times, out of touch, and SOME ARE prejudiced against our school (and all charter schools). This is something we have ample evidence of, and this penalty just makes it more clear. We will continue to fight for our school, and for all charter schools, to be able to innovate and be different without being punished.
Thank you for all your support. Please reach out to me if you would like to help in our appeal, and/or if you have insights or thoughts that may help us in this fight.
Cordially,
Carolyn Sharette

December Builders Theme
I am a Builder when I look for ways to serve others – Kigatsuku
Kigatsuku is a Japanese word meaning “an inner spirit to act without being told what to do”, or in other words, “see a need, meet a need”. It’s simple; we don’t need to go out of our way; we don’t need to schedule it; we don’t need to travel to other countries. We only need to look around us and see how we can help the person right in front of us. Opportunities for kigatsuku are everywhere – at school, at home, in the grocery store, and yes, even on the roads!
There is something deeply rewarding about this Builder’s theme as we watch your children fall into the rhythm of kigatsuku. Imagine the energy and influence of an entire community of kigatsuku as we work toward something better than just ourselves. Imagine doing it without reward or compensation. Imagine what we could accomplish if we did the simplest thing – see a need, meet a need!

Hand Washing for Hygiene – Mandy Brown
Greetings to all of our Heroes of Hygiene. Did you know that Oct. 15th is Global Handwashing Day? That’s because handwashing is a like a ‘do-it-yourself’ vaccine. It is the simplest and best way to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of disease. So, every time someone soaps up their hands—hygiene wins, and the germs lose. And that’s good news for everyone.

We are excited to announce the kick-off of the Annual Holiday Giving Campaign for 2020! As the Executive Director of the American Preparatory Education Foundation (APEF), I met with the school Executive Team and together we have come up with a great gift idea for our staff members this year.
As you know, our teachers and staff have gone above and beyond to educate and care for our students during this remarkable year. We felt a special gift was in order, and we wanted something that would help us mark the uniqueness of the past year. So we designed a special, commemorative 2020 logo to go on a navy, zip-up jacket, that we hope to give to each staff member at APA.
As you might imagine, this will be a more expensive gift than normal. Because we are unable to hold holiday parties and staff dinners due to COVID-19, the school has committed to use those funds to pay for a portion of the cost of the jacket. I feel confident that our amazing APA families would be willing to partner with the Foundation on this gift as well, so I have committed us to raising as many dollars as possible to contribute to our teacher gifts. Please join me in making this vision a reality!
INVITATION: We invite all our families to participate in supporting the holiday staff gift campaign by donating to the Holiday Gift Fund. In the past we’ve asked parents to contribute to the Holiday Giving Campaign by purchasing items like chocolates and roses for our teachers and staff. This year we’re asking for you to contribute to a gift that they will have for years to come!
Whatever your family is able to donate will be very much appreciated. Every dollar will help us make this gift a reality for our staff members. No donation is too small. You can make donations at https://www.americanprepfoundation.org/2020-holiday-giving-campaign. Anyone can donate, so if you have relatives who might enjoy the opportunity to bless a teacher this season, please invite them to do so. You may also leave cash or a check made out to APEF with your campus secretary.
We have also created a way for you to be able to personalize your gift to specific staff members by writing a personalized note that will be given to your children’s teachers, or any staff members you choose. In this way, your children’s teachers (or other staff members) will know that you have contributed to their gift.
We appreciate your support of our amazing teachers and staff. THANK YOU!
Email 11.30.20 – Students Taking Materials Home
Dear Parents,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We are happy to be back at school with your students!
In the past several weeks, some of our students have been required to quarantine due to exposure to others with COVID-19, and we’ve learned a lot about how we can best support them during that time at home. We gather all their materials for pick up and provide links to online math and reading lessons. However, there is often a one or two day delay during which they can’t continue learning.
We have decided to have all students take home their groups materials (math & reading) every day, so that in the event of a quarantine, they can immediately work on math and reading from home. Within 24 hours, the teacher will gather the remaining materials and make them available at the reception desk for pick up.
Fortunately, the number of cases at our campus has been low, and we do not anticipate a school closure. We hope that having math and reading materials with the students will provide an easy transition in the event that anyone has to quarantine.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
Thank you!
