January Builders Theme – I am a builder when I work diligently.
“Diligently is defined as something done with great persistence, care or dedication.” At American Prep, we believe in the value of hard work. Consistent and persistent effort builds both personal and academic skills. Reading a classic novel requires more work and effort than a comic book or a Captain Underpants story and is worth so much more to our students. This month we are emphasizing the joy and excitement that can come from exerting effort when engaged in work. Even as adults this joy and excitement can be challenging to feel as we engage in all the different work within our lives, so we need to try to shift our own perspective on work so our children hear us speak positively about engaging in work. Feel free to reference our Builder’s theme throughout the month.

Morning Drop Off
Just a reminder about our updated procedures:
- Walking students to class – we encourage all students to be dropped off at the curb and walk into school independently. However, we know some of your little ones still need your support. If you arrive after 7:45 am and want to walk your student to the classroom you will need to sign in and get a visitor sticker.
- Assemblies – if you are attending an assembly, you do not need to sign in, but you will receive an assembly visitor sticker.
- If you arrive after 8:15 am, please walk your student into the lobby and check them in at the reception desk.
Checking Students Out Early
We have been making many efforts to improve security at our campus. We are now extending this effort to early check outs. If you plan to check your student out before their normal dismissal time, please allow at least 10-15 minutes. Instead of sending parents to find their students, our staff will page or retrieve them from their classroom. Depending on how busy our front lobby is and how many early check outs we have, this may take more time than it has in the past. As a reminder, to check out a student early the adult must be listed as a parent, guardian, or emergency contact and present a photo ID.
Visitor Parking Update
We have created more visitor parking on the eastern side of campus next to the sheep field. The 10 stalls on the right and 10 stalls on the left are reserved for visitors and parents. This will be especially convenient for parents who follow the C/D drop off route. The entire front row of parking closest to the school is also dedicated to visitor parking. PLEASE PARK IN VISITOR STALLS ONLY. All the other parking stalls are assigned to staff, and when parents park in those spots our amazing staff members have no place to park.
From the School Nurse – Head Lice
The school nurse has made this information available to our families about head lice. https://draper2.americanprep.org/headlice/
We encourage all our families to be familiar with the signs, check their students regularly, and treat as needed.
Student Running Programs – Molly Jorgensen
We need you as a coach! We are looking for 2-3 men and 2-3 women to mentor student runners (boys – letmerun.org, girls – girlsontherunutah.org). Trainings begin soon, so please email Molly Jorgensen (mollymjorgensen@gmail.com) right away!

We CAN Donation Drive – Final Report
We CAN Care! We wanted to follow up and let you know what an outstanding success our food drive was this year. Our campus collected 8917 food items, and between all of our campuses we collected a grand total of 39,531 items that were delivered to the Utah Food Bank and various food pantries in Utah. A special shoutout goes to our top five classes who went above and beyond in donating to our food drive:
- Mrs. Malan’s class: 869 items
- Mrs. Erickson’s class: 826 items
- Mrs. Wilding’s class: 686 items
- Mrs. Strong’s class: 653 items
- Mr. Nath’s class: 556 items
Besides the awesome amount of food we collected, we had the chance to think of others and make our world a better place. That spirit of giving was palpable in our schools during the drive and we are so proud of our students who are learning NOW how to be great Builders in their communities. Thank you everyone for your support!
From our Family School Organization (FSO) – Nicole Harman
Seeking FSO Board Volunteers
My name is Stacia Shafovaloff and I have had the privilege of serving as the FSO President elect this year. This means that I have been learning the ropes from the president, Nicole Harman, so that I can take over next year. However for personal, family reasons, I will no longer be able to serve in this capacity. The women on the FSO board are awesome and I have loved working with them and getting to know them. But they need help! We are looking not only to replace me, but also to fill a couple of more roles as well. If you love the teachers at this school and want to get to know other moms, this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!
Please don’t skip over this opportunity! Participating on the FSO board is an awesome and rewarding experience!
If you are interested please contact Nicole at nharman@apamail.org.
Staff Appreciation Week
Staff Appreciation Week is quickly approaching. This year our theme will be thanking our staff for decades of amazing service. Each day we will visit a decade from the past. It should be a lot of fun!
This week takes many hands to put together! The first volunteer opportunity is helping to decorate our school. Please follow the link below to signup. Other signups will come out after our winter break so please watch for those! If you have any questions please contact Nicole at nharman@apamail.org. Thanks!

Holiday Giving Campaign
Thank you to all of the parents who purchased points for APA staff and teachers for the Holiday Giving Campaign! Notes from your students were placed on their doors, and the points have been distributed for them to “shop” from the store. Our first year was a success, and we are already making plans for next year’s Holiday Giving Campaign.
Builders Club
A lot of parents, both new and those who have been around for a while, have asked me what APEF is. Over the next several weeks I will to try to explain some of the things that we do. One of the main focuses of the The Foundation (American Preparatory Education Foundation is a mouthful, so I’m going to save some words!) is Builders Club. For those of you who are not familiar with our Builders Club, I’d like to explain.
Research shows that the most important factor affecting student learning is his or her teacher. As the daughter of a teacher, I have seen, first-hand, the ins and outs of being an educator. It is an extremely rewarding career, but also a challenging and difficult one. Teachers have a very significant, lifelong impact on all of their students. The job of a teacher is not only to educate our children, but also to foster self-esteem and self-confidence in them, to motivate and inspire them, to support and encourage them, and to teach them skills that they will carry into their adult lives. Educators have one of the most important jobs in the world, preparing our children for the future. They shoulder a huge responsibility.
One of APA’s goals is to attract and retain the best teachers and staff. The Builders Club is a subscription-based program that helps to do that by building our compensation fund. It is a great way for our parents and community to show their appreciation. 100% of the funds that are donated to Builders Club are used to pay teacher and staff bonuses. One of my goals is to build this fund so that we can give our teachers and staff larger bonuses, making APA the school that even more great teachers want to come and stay.
More information on APA’s Builders Club can be found at https://www.americanprepfoundation.org/buildersclub. And please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions that you have.

December Builders Theme
I am a builder when I look for ways to serve others. Kigatsuku.
This month we talked about the concept of “kigatsuku” which describes the trait of being able to see others’ needs, to sense others’ needs, and then to strive to meet them without being asked or directed. We continue to see many examples of kigatsuku here at school, we hope you have been seeing some kigatsuku at in your home as well. We are so pleased that our students have caught on to this great concept.
We also hope that when you do see kigatsuku at home, or anywhere else, you notice it and can give praise so your children will expand upon their ability to see others’ needs! We have enjoyed watching the children in school as they have been looking out for others’ needs this month – thank you for sharing your amazing children with us!
Have a wonderful, family filled, fun holiday break!

End of Term and Report Cards
Congratulations! We made it through the second term successfully and both teachers and students are getting into the APA rhythm! Thank you for your hard work in helping your students come prepared and in full uniform to school each day! Report Cards for Term 2 should be coming home with your students before the nice relaxing 2-week long winter break. Please review your student’s report card and set goals for the upcoming term. If you haven’t yet you will want to contact the school to get access to your student’s Alma account so you can check their grades throughout the term. Please make sure that over the 2-week long break you are spending about 30 minutes a day reading and practicing math facts with your student. This will help keep their brain sharp even when not at school. Be safe and get some much needed relaxation, we will see you in 2 weeks!
Upcoming Event Details
Vision Screenings – January 9
We will be conducting vision screenings for all students at our campus. The students will be given a distance vision test to see if they can see at a 20/30 level. If your student fails the test, we will notify you of the results of the test and provide a referral letter with more instructions.
Vision screening is not a substitute for an eye examination by an eye care specialist, and it is important that your child see an eye care specialist once a year to evaluate eye health. If you do not wish your child to participate in the screening program, please request an exemption form from the nurse at nurse@apamail.org.
We need LOTS of parent volunteers to assist with vision screenings. A short 5 minute training is provided, and this is a great way to get in your volunteer hours! This is not a volunteer opportunity that will work to bring small children.
Please contact Karen Thelin at kthelin@apamail.org or nurse@apamail.org with questions or if you are available to volunteer, or sign up on the signupgenius link here:

Student Running Programs – Molly Jorgensen
We need you as a coach! Do you enjoy the fun-loving spirit of children? Do you want to help guide their character using running as a vehicle? Do you need volunteer hours? I am looking for 2-3 great male examples for the new-to-our-school Let Me Run program for boys, grades 4th – 6th, (find information at letmerun.org) I am looking for 2-3 great female examples for the tried and true Girls on the Run program for girls grades 3rd – 6th. (find information at girlsontherunutah.org)
The training is fun and the time working with the students (our children) is so rewarding. Both programs help girls and boys in the upper grades learn to navigate some of the challenges they face as they look forward to leaving elementary school. Issues like being yourself, dealing with difficult emotions, and learning to serve the community are addressed alongside a curriculum of fun, challenging physical activity. I will start trainings as soon as we get back from Winter Break, so please email me, (mollymjorgensen@gmail.com) right away!

December Builders Theme
I am a builder when I look for ways to serve others. Kigatsuku.
As we talk more about kigatsuku with our students this week, we have learned that being kigatsuku means
- being aware of the needs and feelings of others
- looking for ways to help like opening doors, picking up trash, carrying books for teachers…
- using building language that helps people feel good
- serving others by being unselfish—sharing, taking turns, compromising…
- being willing to give, especially anonymously
Once when Mother Teresa was asked how to make the world a better place, she replied, “Come and see.” She encouraged others to actively observe and then to serve the best they can. Note the phrases from the list above – being aware; looking for; serving; being willing. These phrases call us to action. We have witnessed many instances of kigatsuku these last few days. It is rewarding to see our students catch the vision of this month’s builders theme. This week we challenge you to increase and improve your kigatsuku experiences by not just noticing, but sincerely seeking them out. We encourage our students to look for trash on the playground; look for teachers who need help carrying things; look for students who need a friend, etc. The opportunities are endless and everyone benefits!

We CAN Donation Drive – December 2 – 18
Only 1 week left of our donation drive! So far we have collected more than 4500 food items. Wahoo! It has been so exciting to see how much we can accomplish as we all work together. We can be advocates for those in our community that need us, and that is a very important part of being a Builder and an Ambassador for good.
Let’s finish strong–keep bringing in those food items! The drive will end on Wednesday December 18th! Since we reached our goal (3000 items) as a campus we’ll celebrate with a crazy tie/sock day on Thursday December 19th. If we double that goal (6000 items), we will have a FREE DRESS DAY on Friday January 10th.
Top three classes also earn a prize on Friday December 20th. Good luck! AND THANK YOU for your generosity!

Air Quality
Winter months in Utah bring snow sports, holiday feasting, and seasonal inversions. As you’ve watched the mountain line slowly disappear behind a hazy fog of pollution, have you ever wondered what it means for your family’s health, and what you can do about it? If you have, you aren’t alone.
During an inversion, air pollution, including PM 2.5 (Particulate Matter), along with cold air gets trapped in the valley and builds until a storm front blows through. Due to its small size, PM 2.5 can get deep into the lungs and can lead to a number of health issues, including aggravated asthma. For sensitive groups, including children or those with respiratory or heart conditions, PM 2.5 can have a greater health impact.
The Utah Recess Guidance is a set of air quality guidelines for schools to use in determining whether to move recess indoors based off of PM 2.5 levels. In 2016, a group of health scientists, parents, school personnel, and air quality advocacy groups updated the Guidance to be more protective and align with the EPA AQI. Here is the website we follow to determine air qualityhttps://www.ksl.com/weather/airQuality. We reference the Draper 1-800 Contacts station.

For the increased safety and security of our building we will be asking parents to sign in starting at 7:45 am. Any parents wanting to take their students to a classroom will be required to check in and out, and wear a sticker to identify them. Parents do not need to check in to attend a morning assembly, but we ask you do wear an assembly sticker and stay in the Gym or Multipurpose Room. If you would like to walk to the classroom, you must check in first.
We will be adjusting our procedures for checking out students during the day. Please allow more time (10-15 minutes) when you come to check out your student.

Wow! We have enjoyed “Beach Bash” events for our 5th and 6th grade students the past two weeks. THANK YOU to our incredible parent volunteers who came and gave of their time and talents to make our event possible. Our Beach Bash taught us how to stay positive, how to navigate the pressures of social media, how to be a good friend, good manners at a restaurant, and how to use the 5 conversation starters to be able to talk to anyone! Whew! We learned a LOT!
We have loved seeing the amazing ways that students are serving at home and at school. This month our value is “kigatsuku” – a Japanese word which means the spirit of giving. Keep up the great work!

ONLY ONE WEEK REMAINING IN THE HOLIDAY GIVING CAMPAIGN!
HOLIDAY GIVING CAMPAIGN
Let APA shop for you! This year our Holiday Giving Campaign gives you the opportunity to purchase points that teachers and staff members can exchange for gifts. They will be able to pool their points to “purchase” gifts of their choosing. They can select from a catalog of items that include household goods like Instant Pots and kitchen gadgets, movie theater gift packages, jewelry, and spirit wear, among many others. The Holiday Gift Campaign is similar to Chuck E. Cheese or Dave & Busters. You buy the tickets (points) for the teachers, and they get to choose from one of the prizes in that category. The best part is that teachers can bank their smaller vouchers to buy bigger gifts. So if a teacher gets four 25 point vouchers, they can pick a 100 point prize! Go to https://www.americanprepfoundation.org/draper-2 to purchase your points.
PLEASE USE AMAZON SMILE FOR YOUR AMAZON PURCHASES
AMAZON SMILE
Do you shop on Amazon.com? If you’re like 90% of America’s online shoppers, the answer is yes! By going to https://smile.amazon.com/ch/45-4568023 you can choose American Preparatory Education Foundation to be your preferred charitable foundation and Amazon will give us a percentage of your purchases. When you shop on https://smile.amazon.com, the prices remain the same. The only thing that changes is that your purchases help us. Be sure to always go to the Amazon Smile link when making your purchases. This being the holiday season, now is the perfect time to start using Amazon Smile if you haven’t already.
We CAN Care
During the month of December, American Prep has an annual tradition of partnering with some of our local community organizations to collect items needed in our community. This year we are collecting canned and non-perishable items for The Utah Food Bank. Thank you to our families and students that have brought in so many items. We are over half-way to our first goal!

November Builders Theme
I am a Builder when I express gratitude in word and deed.
As November comes to a close, we would like to take a moment to express our gratitude to all of you in our American Prep family. Thank you for all you do to make our school such a wonderful place to come each day. We are grateful for the efforts you make day in and day out bringing your students to school on time, having them dressed for success, and ready to learn! Thank you for signing learning plans and helping with homework and practicing math facts with such dedication that you say them in your sleep! Thank you for your willingness to volunteer. Each of you brings something unique to our school community and we appreciate your generous gifts of time and talent. We could not do what we do without your enthusiasm and support. It is a privilege to teach your children and we are grateful for this opportunity you have given us. Thank you!

RISE Interim Testing – December 6 – 10
Students at American Prep are assessed throughout the year in both homeroom classes and achievement-leveled groups. At the end of the year, two kinds of assessments are given: assessments that are required by the state of Utah and assessments that are required by American Prep to make sure that students have reached the academic levels needed to be promoted to the next grade.
The state of Utah requires students grades 3-6 to take the RISE test. These are computer adaptive tests that are based on the common core standards that Utah has adopted. This year to give our students extra practice they will be taking Interim tests in the month of December. These tests will let our teachers know what standards the students need to focus on in order to be successful on the end of year assessments.
Each grade (3rd – 6th) has been assigned a testing day. Please make sure that during these important days your students are getting to sleep early so they are well rested and that each morning they are getting a good breakfast.
Feel free to practice and learn about these tests with your students at home. Practice tests and more information are available online at:

Reminder about Toys
We have had several instances of students bringing toys/souvenirs to school. We wanted to remind you that toy guns, swords, or anything that resembles a weapon cannot be brought to school. It is also not appropriate for students to bring Pokemon or other collecting cards. Stuffed animals or other toys may only be brought with teacher approval. If you have questions, contact your student’s teacher directly.
Lost and Found
The items that have been accumulating in our Lost and Found will be in the lobby through Tuesday, November 26th for you to come and look through. We would LOVE for you to pick up items that your students have misplaced here around the school.
After Tuesday, November 26th, they will be donated for those less fortunate that we are to be able to use. PLEASE stop by!
Check in Time
For the increased safety and security of our building we will be asking parents to sign in starting at 7:45 am. Any parents wanting to take their students to a classroom will be required to check in and out. Parents do not need to check in to attend a morning assembly.
Parent Managers Needed for Clubs
Starting in January, all our clubs will have at least one Parent Manager who has had a background check and receives a small stipend to manage the club. We anticipate needing four Parent Managers to run the Chess/Math Club and the Lego Club. If you are available and interested in helping, please contact Mr. McVicar (kmcvicar@apamail.org).
School Lunch
PLEASE Order Lunch over the weekend for Monday, December 2nd, 2019.
https://apalunch.h1.hotlunchonline.net/
All orders must be placed 48 hours in advance – if you want your student to have lunch on Monday, please order by this Saturday.
As a reminder, we do not have extra utensils for our students to use so please be sure to send the items they will need to eat their lunch.
Carpool Connection
A family with 2 kids needs carpool for the pick up in the afternoons. We live on 3800 W and 10600 S in South Jordan (this is not the exact address). I can offer carpool for the morning drop off.
