COVID Update 10.9.20
Hello APA families and Staff!
Following is this week’s COVID report:
Draper 1: Cases – 0, Quarantined – 5
Draper 2: Cases – 1, Quarantined – 9
Draper 3: Cases – 0, Quarantined – 0
West Valley 1: Cases – 2, Quarantined – 21
West Valley 2: Cases – 2, Quarantined – 23
Salem: Cases – 1, Quarantined – 28
ELC: Cases – 0, Quarantined – 0
We received very good news today from the Utah Department of Health!
In the future, if a student is exposed at school, and was wearing a mask, and needs to quarantine, the student may be tested on day 7 of the quarantine and if their test is negative they may return to school! This has the potential to cut down quarantine times by half! This change was made after the health department looked at a lot of data that shows that by day 7 a great percentage of those who eventually get COVID from an exposure have the virus and it will show on a test. So, conversely, if a test is given on day 7 and is negative the person is not a carrier.
Have a wonderful fall break!

September Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I demonstrate integrity
I am a Builder when I demonstrate integrity. Integrity is that quality of doing what is right even when no one is watching. Our students are working on doing that this month. Sometimes what seems a very simple demonstration of integrity is very challenging for a child. The more often we name and notice a child’s demonstration of integrity, the more often they are willing to try something more difficult. We are focusing on integrity this month, so please use this great opportunity to notice when your child has demonstrated integrity and tell them.

Professional Qualifications
Our parent surveys consistently express confidence and overwhelming satisfaction with our teachers at American Prep. Parents are welcome at any time to request information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers including: 1) whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction or whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; 2) the baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree; and 3) whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
District Parent Involvement Policy
At the conclusion of each school year, end-of-year assessment data is reported and organized into a Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA). The CNA includes demographic, attendance, and assessment data. Also included in the CNA are the results of the annual Parent Survey. This Survey evaluates, among other things, the satisfaction of parents with the quality of the academic program and their opportunities to participate in the schools. American Preparatory administrators annually invite select staff and parents from each school to participate in a District/School Planning Meeting. This Committee reviews the Comprehensive Needs Assessment and analyzes areas for potential improvement. District/School Plans are developed with goals, action steps, and budget relationships. District and School Parent Involvement Policies are evaluated for effectiveness. School, Parent, and Student Compacts are also examined by this Committee for recommended changes.
School Parent Involvement Policies
School Parent Involvement Policies vary slightly by campus and are located within the Parent-Student Handbooks. These Handbooks are distributed annually to parents and will soon be accessible on the APA website under the Parent Library drop-down tab. The Handbooks can also be accessed via this link: https://www.americanprep.org/parent-student-handbooks/.

2020-2021 School Land Trust Program – September 29
“The School LAND Trust program brings tens of millions of dollars annually to academic programs in public schools across Utah. The funds are generated from school trust lands. Each public school in Utah elects a school community council consisting of parents, teachers, and the principal. Charter Schools have Trust Lands Councils. Each council carefully reviews student assessments and progress to decide which academic areas they want to focus on. Plans are developed to improve student academic performance in the identified academic areas with the annual School LAND Trust funds. The plans are approved by the council, submitted on this website, and approved by the local school board or chartering entity.” www.schoollandtrust.org.

September Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I build with Enthusiasm
September has been a great month at American Prep! Our students and teachers are the embodiment of our Builders Theme – Building with enthusiasm. Thank you to our great parents who are also enthusiastically supporting your children, assisting them to complete their homework, ensuring they are prepared for school each day!
You may wonder why enthusiasm is so important to us at American Prep – well, in our Parent Student Handbook you will find the following is one of our Foundations:
“Enthusiasm: Enthusiasm propels one on to greater effort. Enthusiasm makes work enjoyable and provides encouragement for others to put forth increased effort. It is the responsibility of every member of the American Prep community to bring enthusiasm to their work and to their associations at school.”
So you can see, we understand that enthusiasm is a key component to our success as a school, and more importantly the success of your student! We commit as staff members to bring enthusiasm to our work each day with your students, because we know it will result in higher effort being put forth by your child, and greater success! We appreciate our parents so much who also bring enthusiasm to us in our interactions and help us put forth our best efforts!

September Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I build with Enthusiasm
The meaning of enthusiasm is “intense and eager enjoyment, interest, or approval.” The source of the word is the Greek “enthousiasmos,” which ultimately comes from the adjective entheos, “having the God within.”
- Enthusiastic people RADIATE ENERGY. When these people walk into a room, heads turn and people gather. Their smile lights up a room.
- Enthusiastic people are CURIOUS AND INTERESTED in life. They love learning and live in a state of wonder, surprise, and delight.
- Enthusiastic people FOCUS ON THE GOOD (even when things aren’t). They emphasize what they can do rather than what they can’t do.
- Enthusiastic people FEEL DEEPLY AND LAUGH OFTEN. They show compassion for life’s difficulties and use humor to help themselves and others through tough times.
- Enthusiastic people DO SOMETHING THEY LOVE every day, no matter how small. They are passionate about their work, hobbies, crafts, or the sports they play — and it shows!
- Enthusiastic people SERVE A GREATER PURPOSE than themselves. They have a desire to help others and build community.

Mask Requirement
We are so grateful to have received free masks from French Toast for our students. This has allowed us to have masks available for those who forget, lose, or soil their mask. Unfortunately, this supply of free masks is almost gone!
Please remember to send your student to school with a clean mask EVERY day! We recommend having an extra mask stored in their backpack in case theirs gets broken, dirty, or lost.
Going forward, any students who don’t have a mask will be required to call home and you will need to bring them a mask before they can attend school.
APA Masks – Buy Yours Now!
Earlier this year our Spirit Wear distributor had masks for sale, and they sold out quickly! Those who purchased these masks reported they were AWESOME! There are two sizes – one for adults and one for children. They have adjustable ear straps, making them fit snugly and not fall down. They have a nose insert that helps prevent glasses from fogging, and the material is very breathable.
We have worked with this supplier to design a mask for our campus, and we are making it available for pre-order at cost – $7.00. Pre-orders will be collected for one week, and then it takes 2-3 weeks for masks to be produced and delivered. We expect to have them by the time students return from fall break. https://www.americanprep.org/product/apa-custom-2-ply-face-mask/

Its members will assist the APEF Executive Director with event planning for fundraisers, networking, and community relations. With COVID-19 restrictions in place creativity is vital when planning fundraisers and communicating with our APA families and community. This committee will brainstorm and share ideas. The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15 at 2pm. Check in at the reception desk. For more information please go to :

Constitution Day – September 17
We are honored to celebrate the signing of our founding document, the Constitution, on Thursday, September 17th. Each school will be reading the constitution, and we encourage you to read it with your families. As we more fully understand what the Constitution is all about, we can participate in discussions, and advance the noble cause with which this document was written.
Join us at live.KSL.com for the Draper 2 campus reading at 10:00 am. This program will last about an hour.
College Fair Dress Day – September 18
Your student can show support for their favorite college by wearing a t-shirt, sweatshirt/hoodie, or hat. Friday uniform should be worn from the waist down.
September Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I build with Enthusiasm
Walter Chrysler, an American automotive industry executive and the founder of the Chrysler Corporation. One of his mottos was “The real secret to success is enthusiasm.” It’s important for our students to know the attitudes they display towards working hard are a choice. When students develop and display an “I can do hard things” attitude, they are successful and gain further confidence in their abilities.
Parents play a very important role towards their children’s education when they express a belief in their child(ren)’s ability to work hard and succeed, as well as setting an example themselves.
Together—students, parents, and staff—we make a FABULOUS team!

When your student is sick
As we enter the cold and flu season, we appreciate all our parents who keep their students home due to an illness. If an on-campus student is absent for any reason, that student is still enrolled in the on-campus program and is expected to work with his or her homeroom teacher and groups teachers to complete any missing work. Absent on-campus students will not be switched to an off-campus Google classroom for temporary learning. We do, however, offer online reading and math lessons to our absent on-campus students. These lessons can be found under the “Off-Campus Program” tab at americanprep.org. We appreciate our parents who offer extra support at home to help their students get caught up. Please contact your homeroom teacher with any questions regarding missing work.
