December Builders Theme
I am a builder when I look for ways to serve others. Kigatsuku.
As we talk more about kigatsuku with our students this week, we have learned that being kigatsuku means
- being aware of the needs and feelings of others
- looking for ways to help like opening doors, picking up trash, carrying books for teachers…
- using building language that helps people feel good
- serving others by being unselfish—sharing, taking turns, compromising…
- being willing to give, especially anonymously
Once when Mother Teresa was asked how to make the world a better place, she replied, “Come and see.” She encouraged others to actively observe and then to serve the best they can. Note the phrases from the list above – being aware; looking for; serving; being willing. These phrases call us to action. We have witnessed many instances of kigatsuku these last few days. It is rewarding to see our students catch the vision of this month’s builders theme. This week we challenge you to increase and improve your kigatsuku experiences by not just noticing, but sincerely seeking them out. We encourage our students to look for trash on the playground; look for teachers who need help carrying things; look for students who need a friend, etc. The opportunities are endless and everyone benefits!

End of Term and Report Cards
Congratulations! We made it through the second term successfully and both teachers and students are getting into the APA rhythm! Thank you for your hard work in helping your students come prepared and in full uniform to school each day! Report Cards for Term 2 should be coming home with your students before the nice relaxing 2-week long winter break. Please review your student’s report card and set goals for the upcoming term. If you haven’t yet, you will want to contact the school to get access to your student’s Alma account so you can check their grades throughout the term. Please make sure that over the 2-week long break you are spending about 30 minutes a day reading and practicing math facts with your student. This will help keep their brain sharp even when not at school. Be safe and get some much needed relaxation, we will see you in 2 weeks!
6th grade Music and Science Fair Evening
Last night was our 6th grade concert and science fair. It was a wonderful evening filled with music and very creative science projects.
We would like to thank our 6th grade teachers, Ms. Beal, Mr. Henderson, Mrs. Burkholder, Mrs. Smith, Ms. Butler and Ms. Weiss for their help and encouragement they give to our students each and every day. Thank you Ms. Elliott for teaching the science classes and organizing the Science Fair. They all did an amazing job!
The music portion of the evening was our Band, under the direction of Dr. Marin and Dr. Caceras, and our Orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Nielson, Dr. Posey and Mr. Turney. They gave an amazing performance. What a terrific way to end the evening.
Below are our Science Fair finalists who will participate in the Salt Lake Charter Schools Science and Engineering Fair to be held at Salt Lake Community College-Miller Campus on February 6th. Congratulations to all of you!!

Lego Club – November 26 to December 17
LEGO club is canceled until after the winter break. We will resume in January IF we receive applications for a Parent Manager of the Lego Club and enough parent volunteers to run the weekly meetings. Please contact Mr. McVicar (kmcvicar@apamail.org) if you are willing to be the Lego Club Parent Coordinator.
Parent coordinators attend every week, organize other parent volunteers, and help the club run smoothly. If you volunteer, there will be a small stipend and your student attends Lego, Math, and/or Chess club for free. Next semester all APA sponsored clubs will cost $15-30 each.
We CAN Donation Drive – December 2 – 18
Only 1 week left of our donation drive! So far we have collected more than 4500 food items. Wahoo! It has been so exciting to see how much we can accomplish as we all work together. We can be advocates for those in our community that need us, and that is a very important part of being a Builder and an Ambassador for good.
Let’s finish strong–keep bringing in those food items! The drive will end on Wednesday December 18th! Since we reached our goal (3000 items) as a campus we’ll celebrate with a crazy tie/sock day on Thursday December 19th. If we double that goal (6000 items), we will have a FREE DRESS DAY on Friday January 10th.
Top three classes also earn a prize on Friday December 20th. Good luck! AND THANK YOU for your generosity!

Air Quality
Winter months in Utah bring snow sports, holiday feasting, and seasonal inversions. As you’ve watched the mountain line slowly disappear behind a hazy fog of pollution, have you ever wondered what it means for your family’s health, and what you can do about it? If you have, you aren’t alone.
During an inversion, air pollution, including PM 2.5 (Particulate Matter), along with cold air gets trapped in the valley and builds until a storm front blows through. Due to its small size, PM 2.5 can get deep into the lungs and can lead to a number of health issues, including aggravated asthma. For sensitive groups, including children or those with respiratory or heart conditions, PM 2.5 can have a greater health impact.
The Utah Recess Guidance is a set of air quality guidelines for schools to use in determining whether to move recess indoors based off of PM 2.5 levels. In 2016, a group of health scientists, parents, school personnel, and air quality advocacy groups updated the Guidance to be more protective and align with the EPA AQI. Here is the website we follow to determine air qualityhttps://www.ksl.com/weather/airQuality. We reference the Draper 1-800 Contacts station.
Bookkeeper Needed
The American Prep Education Foundation is looking for a bookkeeper to work 15 hours per week, preferably 3 hours each day school is in session. Quickbooks experience is required. If you are interested in this position, please go to americanprep.org and fill out an application on the careers section.
Sibling Enrollment and Transfer Requests
One of the first steps in our enrollment process is identifying siblings of currently enrolled students. Do you have a sibling of a student already enrolled here at APA, and you would like them to attend APA next year? Do you need to transfer to another APA campus? Please email Ms. Hickman lhickman@apamail.org to ask for the link. Ms. Hickman will gladly assist as you register siblings or make a transfer.
Substitute Teachers Needed
We are looking for APA parents to become substitute teachers for our schools! We provide all training, and the pay is $80-90 per day. This is a great time of year to become a substitute teacher – save up for those holiday plans in advance. We provide in-depth, paid training so you will feel comfortable in your duties. APA is a FUN place to work! We’d love to have you on our team!
Maybe you can only commit to one day per week – that would be fine with us! Or, work every day – whatever suits your schedule! We need substitute teachers every day and we would really appreciate your help. Also, please tell your family members and friends about this opportunity!

Drop off/Pick up
For the increased safety and security of our building we will be asking parents to sign in starting at 7:45 am. Any parents wanting to take their students to a classroom will be required to check in and out, and wear a sticker to identify them. Parents do not need to check in to attend a morning assembly, but we ask you do wear an assembly sticker and stay in the Gym or Multipurpose Room. If you would like to walk to the classroom, you must check in first.
We will be adjusting our procedures for checking out students during the day. Please allow more time (10-15 minutes) when you come to check out your student.
Parent Managers Needed for Clubs
Starting in January, all our clubs will have at least one Parent Coordinator who has had a background check and receives a small stipend to manage the club. We anticipate needing four Parent Coordinators to run the Chess/Math Club and the Lego Club. If you are available and interested in helping, please contact:
Mr. McVicar (kmcvicar@apamail.org).
Character Development Corner – Mandy Brown
Wow! We have enjoyed “Beach Bash” events for our 5th and 6th grade students the past two weeks. THANK YOU to our incredible parent volunteers who came and gave of their time and talents to make our event possible. Our Beach Bash taught us how to stay positive, how to navigate the pressures of social media, how to be a good friend, good manners at a restaurant, and how to use the 5 conversation starters to be able to talk to anyone! Whew! We learned a LOT!
We have loved seeing the amazing ways that students are serving at home and at school. This month our value is “kigatsuku” – a Japanese word which means the spirit of giving. Keep up the great work!
From our Family School Organization (FSO) – Nicole Harman

ONLY ONE WEEK REMAINING IN THE HOLIDAY GIVING CAMPAIGN!
HOLIDAY GIVING CAMPAIGN
Let APA shop for you! This year our Holiday Giving Campaign gives you the opportunity to purchase points that teachers and staff members can exchange for gifts. They will be able to pool their points to “purchase” gifts of their choosing. They can select from a catalog of items that include household goods like Instant Pots and kitchen gadgets, movie theater gift packages, jewelry, and spirit wear, among many others. The Holiday Gift Campaign is similar to Chuck E. Cheese or Dave & Busters. You buy the tickets (points) for the teachers, and they get to choose from one of the prizes in that category. The best part is that teachers can bank their smaller vouchers to buy bigger gifts. So if a teacher gets four 25 point vouchers, they can pick a 100 point prize! Go to https://www.americanprepfoundation.org/draper-2 to purchase your points.
