Our school is great because of the involvement of our parent community! Thank you to the parents that have stepped up and decided to help us during carpool. This is a very important piece of our school day and we appreciate their willingness to get involved and become part of team. Plus, they also get the added benefit of having an all access carpool tag.
Welcome Back Rainbow!
Books, Books, Books!
The extended breaks scheduled throughout the year, give us time to rest, recharge and READ! Here are a couple of books recently finished by Mr. McVicar and are highly recommended! The first is an inspirational story of a young man building a windmill out of recycled parts, and the second is a book about our perceptions and how to view data about our world.
Row4ALS
We had a very special boat and crew that visited our school today. Taking part in a trans-Atlantic rowing challenge a crew of 5 men will be rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in December to raise awareness and money for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) a debilitating muscular disease. They brought this specialized rowboat to our school so our students could get a “hands-on” look at this amazing boat.

D.I.B.E.L.S. Day
American Prep uses a nationally recognized reading assessment to gather important data from every student three times during the year. D.I.B.E.L.S.-Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills is used to gather basic information regarding students reading rate and basic comprehension skills. We use this data along with our program mastery tests to determine a students basic reading level and to help place them in the best instructional group possible. We just finished our first assessment for the year and now have a baseline to measure student’s progress throughout the year.
Chess Club
The first Chess Club meeting of the year was today. Thanks to parent volunteers and all the interested students that attended! Chess is a great game for developing critical thinking and logic skills. The club meets on Mondays from 3:30-4:30 in room #233 is open to all grades, even Kindergarten students. We can always use parents that enjoy the game and are interested in playing and coaching students. Contact Mr. McVicar kmcvicar@apamail.org if interested in joining the club.
Volunteer Power!
American Prep has many needs that are filled with the many parent volunteers that come in and generously donate their time. Our school model requires a larger instructional staff than most schools and so we have an increased need for parents to help us with many other office tasks.
Thank you for all the parents that have been volunteering in the front office.
