November Builders Theme
I am a Builder when I express gratitude in word and deed.
What a wonderful month we are having at American Prep! Veterans Assembly, this week, was a great addition to our month showing gratitude in word and deed – with students writing letters, preparing songs, writing essays, and much more! About 140 veterans joined us with their families and we spent a wonderful hour honoring them. The students sang patriotic songs, and we heard from inspirational speakers. Our veterans were presented with a letter from a student and a commemorative pin that read “Honored Veteran 2019 American Preparatory Academy”. Please ask your student to share their thoughts and feelings about this special day and the important things we learned.
It’s easy to remember to use words like “Thank you” in showing gratitude, but there are so many others we can include: “You’re so kind to help me with my math,” or “I really enjoyed the lunch you packed for me today”.
The challenge is showing gratitude in deed. A deed is an action that is performed intentionally. It takes a little extra effort. We can show gratitude by writing a note to someone, respecting school property and rules, and washing the dishes for someone that prepared you a meal. November is a great month to remember to show gratitude in both word and deed.

Please join us on Monday, November 18th from 5pm-7pm at Chick-Fil-A in Draper for a spirit night! TEN percent of ALL sales during that time will benefit our school. So make sure to spread the word and plan an easy and fun dinner for your family!

As an FSO we would really like everyone to download the BoxTop App and start using it! Currently we have earned $60 from people using the app. If you download the app, and send the FSO an email with proof that it’s downloaded, we have an APA window sticker for you. The app is so much easier and it quickly earns money for our school. However, do not throw away the physical BoxTops, we will continue to turn those in for as long as we can!
Our goal for BoxTops is $3500 for this school year. This is roughly each family earning the school $5.00 in Boxtops. If we meet this goal, the students will earn a free shoe day. We will also have a classroom competition starting in the next few weeks. Questions? Send us an email or Go Check out Box Top information here:

4TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make the Holiday Boutique a success! I received so many compliments from vendors and attendees. Thank you to Shannyn Steinman, Smita Virkar, Saren Fassbinder, Laura Smith, Jennifer Binks, and Whitney Kinder for being part of the committee. You did a great job! And to all of our volunteers who showed up to help with set up, throughout the event, and clean up, THANK YOU! We can’t run successful events without the help of our amazing volunteers. We appreciate you so much!
Thank you, also, to Josh Cannon, Phillip Miner, and the OPS team for making sure that everything was set up for us, and to Bryan Durst, Kevin McVicar, and Brad Sheneman for rearranging schedules so that we could have the gym early. There are so many people who do things behind the scenes that don’t often get mentioned. You are appreciated more than you know!
And a big shout out goes to Mike VanDyke from Bell Photography who took the family and Santa & Mrs. Claus photos at the boutique. Mike also came to every Veteran’s Day assembly at our Utah schools this past week and a half and took photos of the veterans and their families. When you see him around our schools, be sure to thank him. He is always gracious about accepting our requests for photos, printing, and anything else that he can do for us.
COOL SCHOOL OF THE WEEK APA made an impression last week when we were featured as Fox 13’s Cool School of the Week! A HUGE thank you goes to Mrs. Wilding’s class, Mrs. Foster’s class, Mrs. Leitch’s class, Joy Price and the Ballroom Dance Team, and Kristen Smith and the Cheer Team! You all did an AMAZING job! Big Budah and Fox 13’s cameraman were impressed!
The administration and staff at the Draper 2 and Draper 3 campuses were also instrumental in making all of this happen. Staff and administration came in early, adjusted class schedules, made sure that our schools looked great, and put up with a little craziness on Friday morning. Thank you all for making it possible!

November Builders Theme
I am a Builder when I express gratitude in word and deed.
This month we find ourselves reflecting on what we are grateful for–and what we are going to eat for Thanksgiving dinner. As an introduction to our builders theme this month, we offer this challenge: Can you think of 100 things you are thankful for? Try this exercise with your family. Close your eyes and focus on a blessing in your life. It’s easy to begin by visualizing your family members and friends. Envision an image of each one in your mind. Offer a silent “thank you” to the person or object of your appreciation. How many things are on your list so far?
Next start to think about things that you may take for granted like the sunshine, a warm bed, food in your home, your teacher’s help on that assignment. Good is everywhere! Relax into the feelings of gratitude…take a deep breath…feel more gratitude as you recognize your 100 blessings.
William Faulkner said, “Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: it must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.” The latest brain research shows that feeling gratitude for 30 seconds six times a day (a mere three minutes!) will enable our neurons to fire and wire together around gratitude and we will more easily and frequently access more gratitude.
Gratitude has a positive impact on our lives by improving physical and emotional health as well as boosting self-esteem. Simply put, being grateful feels good.
Hey! I’m grateful for that; I’ll put that first on my list!

I recently heard on the radio that taking 2 minutes a day to reflect on things you are grateful for leads to greater happiness and less stress in your life! There are also studies that show that when you look for things to be grateful for, your brain starts recognizing them more easily every day. Gratitude is a fantastic virtue to practice, and November is a natural time to do so. Next week watch for our latest video on gratitude to watch at home with your child(ren)!

October Builders Theme – I am a Builder when I am Perfectly Honest
Our theme for October is “I am a builder when I am perfectly honest”. If you asked our students “what does it mean to be perfectly honest?” some of their suggestions may include telling the truth, being trustworthy, not cheating, and not stealing.
Honesty includes telling the truth, but it’s more than that. It’s about not taking things that don’t belong to you, not hiding information, and not being afraid of the truth.
It can sometimes be hard to tell the truth because we are afraid of the consequences. But, there is also a consequence for not telling the truth. It could be described as a burden. When we are honest, we can feel good about ourselves.
Cheating is also not being perfectly honest. Looking at your neighbor’s paper during a test, whispering the answers to a test, correcting a student’s work dishonestly or even reporting another student’s scores dishonestly is cheating.
When we are not perfectly honest we feel bad and it feels heavy. Our 6th graders performed the poem “Myself” by Edgar A. Guest. If you have a 6th grader, please ask him or her to share this wonderful poem with you. It perfectly describes why it is always best to be perfectly honest, ending with:
I never can fool myself, and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience free.

Academic Update : Homework
Homework is an integral part of the education program at American Preparatory Academy. It is an extension of classroom lessons and should directly relate to class work. It reinforces skills and concepts that are taught and helps develop good study skills and habits. It also informs parents of what is being taught in the classroom. It is the hope of American Preparatory Academy that our students will come to love learning, and desire to spend free time studying and reading. To assist our families in developing life-long learners, American Preparatory Academy has adopted the following policies based upon these principles.
Homework is assigned with coordination between teachers and consideration of the importance of child participation in family activities and responsibilities. Parents should anticipate that their students will have homework every night in at least one of the subjects being studied. It is our intention that homework given will be appropriate, relevant, interesting, and at times, challenging. Homework assigned should not be new material for students, but should be a review, extra practice, or an extension of material already taught in school.
Students should be able to complete their homework within the time frames below, with the exception of special projects or in cases where the student fails to complete classwork in a timely manner, or if a student falls behind due to tardy arrivals, absences, or failure to attend to learning or use time effectively during the school day. These times do not include music practice or free reading time. Students in grades 1-4 should read an additional period of time each evening, (at least 15 minutes). In grades 5-8 this time may, but will not always, include free reading time. Students in advanced math and reading courses may need additional time for homework completion each evening.
Kindergarten – 10 minutes Fifth Grade – 60 Minutes
First Grade – 20 Minutes Sixth Grade – 60 Minutes
Second Grade – 30 Minutes Seventh Grade – 70 Minutes
Third Grade – 40 Minutes Eighth Grade-90 Minutes
Fourth Grade – 50 Minutes Ninth-Twelfth Grade – 90-120 Minutes
An American Preparatory Academy student should spend time each day studying, whether or not homework is assigned. If no homework is assigned, students are encouraged to review math facts, work on MathScore, read, practice writing, study spelling words, or read a book with their parents. We believe it is in the best interest of our students to spend their free time reading, studying, and playing games that are mentally stimulating.
If a parent believes the homework assigned is excessive or if their child is not receiving regular homework, they may fill out a “Homework Response Form”, (available at the school office), and return it to the teacher. Administration will review all response forms.

From our Family School Organization (FSO) – Nicole Harman
As an FSO we would really like everyone to download the BoxTop App and start using it instead of cutting out box-tops. It is so much easier and it earns money for our school. However, do not throw away physical BoxTops as we will continue to turn those in for as long as we can! Boxtops can be turned in to your teachers.
Our goal for BoxTops is $3500 for this school year. This is roughly each family earning the school $5.00 in Boxtops. You can watch us meet this goal in the App. 🙂 If we meet this goal, the students will earn a free shoe day. Go Check out Box Top information here:

Thank you to everyone who donated food items and their time to help the FSO feed our wonderful staff during Parent Teacher Conferences. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

4th Annual Holiday Boutique
APA’s 4th Annual Holiday Boutique is NEXT WEEK! A flyer will be going out next week. It will be held on Friday, November 8, 2pm – 8pm and on Saturday, November 9, 9am – 2pm. Click for flyer
We are so excited to have so many school groups and students participating this year! We are still taking applications for student entrepreneurs and vendors. Please go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/apaboutiquevendors/ for details. The cost for a student booth is $10.
We need MANY more volunteers to help at the boutique. Your volunteer time will go towards the 20 hours of volunteer time that are required for each APA family each year. For those of you who have a hard time volunteering during the week, this is the perfect opportunity to volunteer outside of the normal work week. Please go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050548A5AB2EA7F49-4thannual to sign up to volunteer to help with the boutique. We can’t run a successful fundraising campaign without the help of our wonderful parents!
Is your child performing at the Holiday Boutique?
Please invite your family and friends to come and watch your child perform and support this fundraiser! The groups that are performing include:
- 5th Grade Choir
- Orchestra
- Choir
- Ballroom Dance
Some of the Draper 2 art students will have artwork on display as well. Please come out and support the local vendors, student entrepreneurs, and student performers!
