February Builders Theme – I am a builder when I befriend others.
Kindness is a very important trait to have when you are trying to befriend other students. Do you know every student in your class? How about in your groups?
Some ways to show that you want to befriend someone could be to smile at them. Have you tried smiling at the students you don’t know? 🙂 Give a student a high five. Include them on your walk to and from your group or recess.
Kindness is one of the easiest ways to befriend other people. When you are kind to someone they of course want to be kind to you.
“To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world. ”
―Dr. Seuss

February Builders Theme – I am a builder when I befriend others.
Here at APA, we always have new students coming into our classes. Have you ever thought about what it is like to be a new student in a new school? Now, think what could YOU do to make that new student’s experience better? Could you:
- help him find his reading or math group?
- play with him at recess?
- introduce him to your friends?
There are so many ways you could befriend a new student. Think about the best way for YOU to make a new student feel welcome.
“You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” ― A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
Academic Update – Lindsay Campbell
Students out at Recess
As the weather changes it is important that students are dressing appropriately. All students will have at least one recess every day, please ensure that they come with a warm coat, hat, and gloves so they can stay warm and healthy. It is important to us that students have the opportunity to go outside to exercise and get fresh air. No students will be allowed to stay in from recess. If they are healthy enough to come to school, then they will need to go outside during their class’s recess time.
We understand that sometimes the air quality will restrict some students from going outside, that is posted and teachers are aware of those students. Instructors have been directed to check the air quality signs throughout the day and make a decision of whether or not to take students out based on both quality and temperature. Please remember, recess time is a teacher’s prep time and there is no staff member that can remain inside to monitor students who want to stay in because it is cold. Please expect and encourage your students to go outside every day.
When the temperature is below 20 degrees or when the students cannot play outside without getting wet, the teacher/instructor will decide if an inside recess is appropriate.

January Builders Theme – I am a builder when I work diligently.
Part of working diligently means that you show up every time you’re supposed to and do your best at whatever is needed. Imagine a farmer and his cows. A cow gives milk, which many of us enjoy drinking or even eating in the form of ice cream or cheese or butter! A cow needs to be milked twice a day. EVERY SINGLE DAY. It doesn’t matter if it is hot outside or freezing cold. It doesn’t matter if the farmer would rather watch a TV show or play a video game. It doesn’t matter if the farmer has a headache or just doesn’t feel like working. Someone HAS to take care of the cow EVERY day . . . not only to enjoy the milk but also because the cow will get sick if the farmer doesn’t milk her on time. So when you see a happy, contented cow, you know that her farmer must be a diligent worker.
How can this apply to your student at school? At school, students don’t have to worry about caring for animals or weeding your tomato garden, or washing down a muddy tractor. But, like a farmer, there might be days where they don’t feel like doing school work. There might be moments where they would rather think of a favorite video game than listen to a math lesson. Now students can be inspired by the example of our farmers! Students can work diligently anyway, because they know that the hard work will pay off. For example, it is much easier to do well on a math test when you’ve participated in class, listened to your teacher, and completed your homework DAILY. Hard work always pays off!
Academic Update – Intervention Parent/Teacher Conferences
It has been a great 3rd term at American Prep! Thank you for sharing your wonderful students with us. We appreciate having you as part of our American Prep family.
At this time each year, we carefully look at all the progress being made by each student. This is the time that we start making plans and setting goals to ensure that each student is on grade level before the end of the year. Benchmarks and promotional guidelines for each grade are set in place to help us determine the success of a student from year to year.
You will be contacted to meet with your student’s teacher for an intervention PTC if your student is not meeting this benchmark. At this meeting you will discuss what needs to be done for your student to meet the promotion guidelines by the end of the year.
This conference is by teacher request only and is made on an individual student basis. If you have questions about promotional guidelines please contact your student’s teacher.

Hopefully your student has talked to you about the Chew Time videos they watch each month about our Builder Themes, as well as videos featuring Reading University characters who exemplify living that virtue. We wanted to give a shout out to the companies who have allowed us to make these videos for free at their locations, so that we could have the setting we needed. We appreciate them for contributing their amazing spaces for the cause of education! THANK YOU TO….

I am looking for great stories of any of our amazing students who have given service in the community. Examples include volunteering at the Humane Society, collecting coats for a Coat Drive, or visiting an elderly neighbor or relative on a regular basis, etc. Those are just EXAMPLES ….. the sky’s the limit! And, if you have pictures to go with the story, that would be WONDERFUL. We feature these stories of students and staff members on our BUILDER Bulletin Boards (we have one located downstairs and one upstairs in our school).

Staff Appreciation Week is February 10-14th and is coming up in 2 weeks! Our theme for this year is “Thank you for Decades of Service”. We will be visiting a different decade each day through food, decorations and gifts. This week is one of our favorites but it is also takes a village to put together. We can not do this without your help! Right now we have about half of the staff taken care of. Please help us so that EVERYONE has a decorated door awaiting them on Monday, February 10th.
Door decorations will need to be hung on Friday, February 7th from 4-6pm. Paper is provided in the copy room, but all other materials need to be provided by those who are decorating. The world is your oyster: do whatever floats your boat for the decor! For example, decorators could find out the year their teacher was born or started teaching and do something from those decades; or pick another decade and decorate in pop culture – including popular foods themes, songs, etc…
Whatever you think will be most meaningful and fun to the teacher is the decade to decorate with!
EVERYONE enjoys seeing all the amazing doors that you all design each year.
Thank you for signing up. We are excited to see your creations!! If you need help/ideas please email me or try searching online for teacher appreciation door decorations. There are a ton of great ideas out there!
Thank you!

January Builders Theme – I am a builder when I work diligently.
Diligence is a rare trait in our culture. Our society has an extreme case of laziness; we start projects and lack the focus to finish. While laziness is a prime problem in our society, a lack of hard workers is an age-old problem. Without further ado, here are five must-have traits of a diligent person.
1) A diligent person is an excellent planner.
2) A diligent person produces excellent work.
3) A diligent person is faithful in everyday tasks.
4) A diligent person pushes through obstacles of all kinds.
5) A diligent person is self-motivated.
Diligence is not cultivated overnight.
Diligence is a muscle that is strengthened with time and consistency. While a diligent person is a hard worker, they also know how to be a smart worker by being a good planner. A diligent person acquires opportunities through the excellence of their work. They also stay faithful in the everyday tasks, and they are not easily deterred by obstacles. Finally, a diligent person is self-driven and knows how to be their own boss. Due to its rarity in our culture, diligence is rapidly increasing in value. Diligence is a dynamic character trait which is a precious treasure worthy of our cultivating.

If your student is not meeting this benchmark you will be contacted to meet with your student’s teacher for an intervention PTC. At this meeting you will discuss what needs to be done for your student to meet the promotion guidelines by the end of the year.
This conference is by teacher request only and is made on an individual student basis. If you have questions about promotional guidelines please contact your student’s teacher.
Upcoming Event Details
Classroom Spelling Bees – Monday, January 27th – Friday, January 31st

Students will be able to wear jeans on this day if they have no #2 – uniform infractions, and no #7 – unprepared card moves January 20th through January 30th.
Please remember that jeans are to be clean, no holes, and you should be able to pinch an inch on either side, without pulling. Jeans must be blue, no other colors are allowed.
Watch for a sticker on your student’s learning plan, Thursday, January 30th to see if your student earned jeans day.
Chick-Fil-A Birthday Celebration – January 31
Chick-Fil-A is bringing chicken nuggets to our students who have birthdays during January, February, and March. If your student has dietary restrictions, please let us know and they will be given a fruit cup instead. Valentines Day – From our Parent Student Handbook
We encourage students to show they care by doing good deeds for others all during the month. Often, the school participates in a school-wide service project during February. If students wish to exchange Valentine cards or treats (completely optional) they may do so, within the following guidelines:
- All classmates must be included in the giving.
- Treats must be wrapped as they will be placed in backpacks to be enjoyed at home.
- You will NOT need to make a Valentine box for your student, we provide paper bags for the students to put their Valentines in.

MathCounts
The annual MathCounts competition will take place at Waterford School on February 8, 2020. Draper APA candidates will begin MathCounts training on Wednesday, January 21 at 2:30 PM at Draper 3 campus (Mrs. Woodcox’s classroom). Students in grades 6, 7, & 8 are eligible for spots on the MathCounts team. Select students will receive invitations to join the team. Students who are invited or are interested in participating in MathCounts may contact Kathy Woodcox at kwoodcox@apamail.org for more information.
Morning Drop Off
If you drop students at the C/D curb, please drive around the back of the Draper 3 campus, even if you do not have secondary students to drop off. There are three lanes at the soccer field and it slows the flow of traffic if C/D cars are in the wrong lane.
Afternoon Pick Up
Please remember to display your tags at all times when driving on campus. It helps our staff identify and assist parents. If you need to come to campus at a different time than your tag allows, contact the elementary office to get a temporary tag (mcarman@apamail.org).
We have had some feedback from the neighborhood to the north that our parents are using the streets to turn around or park and wait for carpool. This makes it very difficult for them. Please be considerate and use other roads farther north.
Please remember that all students must be picked up by 4:00 pm M, T, F and 3:00 pm W, Th. On early dismissal days, students must be picked up by 1:00 pm.
Visitor Parking Update
We have created more visitor parking on the east side of campus, next to the sheep field. The 10 stalls on the right and 10 stalls on the left are reserved for visitors and parents. This will be especially convenient for parents who follow the C/D drop off route. The entire front row of parking closest to the school is also dedicated to visitor parking. PLEASE PARK IN VISITOR STALLS ONLY. All the other parking stalls are assigned to staff, and when parents park in those spots our amazing staff members have no place to park.

Holiday Giving Campaign
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2019 Holiday Giving Campaign. Our first year was a success! We brought in nearly $5,000 with more than half of that going directly to our teachers and staff and the remaining money going to Builders Club. The gifts were delivered this week, and it was fun to see the excitement of the recipients. We are already making plans for next year’s campaign, and I anticipate it being even bigger and better than the first!

January Builders Theme – I am a builder when I work diligently.
In a fascinating book written a few years ago called Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell studied the lives of tremendously successful groups or individuals to find out how they attained success. In this book, a team of psychologists in the early 1990’s, in Berlin, Germany, studied the practice habits of violin students in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. All were asked, “Over the course of your entire career, ever since you first picked up the violin, how many hours have you practiced?”
All of the violinists began playing at roughly five years of age with similar practice times. However, at age eight, practice times began to diverge. By age twenty, the elite performers averaged more than 10,000 hours of practice each, while the less-able performers had only 4,000 hours of practice.
It was shown that elite performers more-than-double the practice hours of the less-capable performers. The Elite are more diligent. The diligent software developer writes code at work, as well as writing software on her own time. The diligent athlete practices on the field with his teammates, then goes home to watch game films. The diligent physician listens to medical podcasts in the car during the car ride home.
We can all become great at something by being diligent. Think about what you like to do and how you would like to become even better at it; then work diligently to achieve it!

Checking Students Out Early
We have been making many efforts to improve security at our campus. We are now extending this effort to early check outs. If you plan to check your student out before their normal dismissal time, please allow at least 10-15 minutes. Instead of sending parents to find their students, our staff will page or retrieve them from their classroom. Depending on how busy our front lobby is and how many early check outs we have, this may take more time than it has in the past. As a reminder, to check out a student early the adult must be listed as a parent, guardian, or emergency contact and present a photo ID.

This month’s theme is WORKING DILIGENTLY. In this month’s Chew Time Video we learned about some of society’s most diligent workers: farmers. We talked about how their work ethic can apply to us at school. For example, a farmer has to care for the cows EVERY SINGLE DAY whether he “feels like it” or not, whether it is hot or cold outside, whether he’d “rather be doing something else.” The farmer does the hard work because he knows it will pay off. And that’s what we can do at school…work diligently even when we “don’t feel like it” etc., knowing the hard work will pay off! Ask your students about it!

Hardship Fund
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill
I’d like to continue educating our parents on what The Foundation is. APEF is a non-profit 501(c)(3), and is the fundraising arm of APA. Last week I talked about Builders Club. This week will explain The Foundation’s Hardship Fund.
The Hardship Fund was developed to provide resources to help APA students, parents, teachers, and staff members with severe hardships. Funds in this account include donations provided by APA-affiliated people and groups such as students, parents, organizations, and staff who want to assist other APA community members in times of crisis. Funds are distributed as determined by the Board of Directors when they are notified of a critical need in the community. Needs may include costs for excessive medical care, funeral costs, or costs from other extreme situations.
I’ve seen first-hand this academic year how those funds have helped a number of our APA families. If you would like to contribute to APA’s Hardship Fund, donations can be made at https://www.americanprepfoundation.org/hardship-fund.
